Amos Pilgrim, Principal

Date: February 12th, 2021, Posted by admin

Kia ora,

My name is Amos Pilgrim and it is my privledge to be Principal at KingsView School from Term 4, 2021 onwards. I have worked in the Education Sector both here in Aotearoa and overseas in State, State-Integrated and Private Education.

KingsView is an exceptional School with Year 1-8 students coming from the Queenstown community, we are a state integrated Christian school which means we teach the national curriculum but with a Christian flavour. The school is reasonably small, only 72 on the roll which allows us to have small class sizes and more individualised attention for each child. The school has four full time teachers, two almost full time teacher aides and an office administrator as well as myself.

If you are interested in the school for your children, please ring the office for an interview, I’d love to show you around.

Ngā mihi

I have taught in various ages (and countries) both in primary teaching, and science and mathematics teaching at high school.  I am passionate about encouraging children to persevere to create their own pathways while becoming self-managing curious learners.  I enjoy assisting children to discover ‘why’ things operate as they do and critically think about their role in varied contexts within society.

I am so excited to be part of the teaching team here at Kingsview School this year.
I originally trained to be a teacher 9 years ago in the UK and I taught in a Special School for Children with Autism. Four years ago I moved to New Zealand and decided to have a break from teaching. However during that time I realised how much I actually love teaching and that there is nothing else I would rather be doing!

Last year I worked at Shotover Primary School and I am very grateful for all that I learnt whilst there. I gained experience in Student Led learning and saw how valuable it can be in enhancing a child’s learning when used in the right context. I am looking forward to being able to use this experience here at KIngsview, particularly when it comes to teaching Inquiry.

I am a Christian and I grew up in a Christian home. My Faith is a massive part of my life and I feel privileged that I am now able to share my Faith with the students I teach.

When I am not at school I love being out in nature exploring all the beauty Queenstown has to offer. I also go to C3 Church and I help lead the Combined Churches Youth Group for High Schoolers, which is a lot of fun!

I have been teaching the Juniors at Kingsview since 2017. I love teaching this age group and I am particularly passionate about helping them learn to read and write. It’s amazing to see their development and independence as they gain control of the written language.

This year I have been extremely blessed to be able to train in Reading Recovery. Teaching Reading Recovery allows me to spend one-on-one time with the students and give them individualized support. This is very beneficial for the students and has also helped me grow as a teacher.

Technology is another interest of mine, and introducing basic computer and coding skills has been a lot of fun in the Junior Classroom. We are very lucky to have resources such as our little robot Botley which the children really enjoy. In our room we also have fun gardening – which I’m learning alongside the children too.

I believe in fostering a love of learning and in supporting the students to grow academically, socially and spiritually. I truly believe in our school values and the importance that they have in the children’s lives. I’m very blessed to be able to teach here and be part of this amazing community.
